Academic Research on Education Abroad (AREA) Database
In order to frame future lines of inquiry into student engagement of students attending U.S. colleges or universities and studying on university-approved programs outside of the country, we mapped the research base from 2002 (post-9/11) to 2020 (pre-Covid-19). By including qualitative studies and additional outcomes, we are enhanced prior literature reviews (e.g., Miller-Perrin & Thompson, 2014; Twombly et al., 2012; Varela, 2017).
We are in collaboration with Frontiers: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, a leading open-access journal in international education, to publish a series of research-to-practice briefs using the AREA Database to center the knowledge and practice on enhancing study abroad experiences and outcomes for underrepresented students, with focus on African-American/Black students, Asian students, First Generation students, Hispanic students, and LGBT+ students.
